CONSULTATION:

A general consultation will last on average about 20-40 minutes ranging from normal healthy children to chronic and acute illnesses and problems.

Some of these include:

  • Colds and flu

  • Chest problems and infections

  • Ear nose and throat problems

  • Gastro-enteritis

  • Rashes and other skin infections

  • Behavioural Problems

  • Developmental problems

  • Learning difficulties

  • Constipation

  • Bladder infections and problems

  • Bedwetting

  • Headaches

  • Asthma

  • Weight and Growth problems

  • Diet and Eating problems

  • Growth concerns

  • Normal Check-ups

  • Fever

  • Vomiting

  • Parental fears and worries

    During a consultation I will discuss the detail related to the problem with you as well as the general health and development of your child. Please remember to bring your child’s Road to Health booklet along to the consultation. Your child will be examined in a child friendly environment, where not only the problem area will be examined but the whole child to reveal other related and non-related problems. I will discuss the details of the findings with you in non medical terms as well as the appropriate treatment options that will suit your child and family best. I will also assist you with advice on management of the condition at home in general and you will be able to stay in contact with me during his/her recovery.

    If you were referred by your GP your GP will receive a relevant feedback letter from the practice.

    Doctor’s information:

    Dr Marelie Steenekamp qualified in Pretoria as a general practitioner in 2001 whereafter she did her internship at Kalafong hospital in 2002.She did work as a medical officer for her community service year in Mafube in the Free State in 2003.

    Her dream of becoming a paediatrician came true when she was offered a post as a registrar in the department of Paediatrics in Pretoria (university of Pretoria) in November 2003 . She wrote her final exams in 2008 and passed with distinction.

    Dr Marelie Steenekamp started her practice in Private Medicine in 2009 at Mediclinic Milnerton where she is currently still working.

    Dr Steenekamp is passionated to work with children, has an easy friendly manner and sees her job as much as an educator and child advocator as a medical practitioner.

    She sees children from birth to 16 years, for any problem ranging from acutely sick children, through medical concerns, education on health topics including diet and behaviour, general health checks etc.

    Dr Steenekamp is fluent in English and Afrikaans, and will speak the language or preference of the patient.

    She is dedicated to making the doctor experience a pleasant one for the parents as well as the child.

    Her office is child friendly with numerous toys and activities to keep the kids occupied while consulting. The examination area is set up to involve the parents as part of the exam, thereby creating a safe and playful experience for the child
